Walter Trice's Backgammon Boot Camp is another great book. But it presumes that you already know the very basics of how to move, etc. Beeing 30 years younger than Magriel's book, it was validateb by modern backgammon software and does not contain big errors. There are better (specialized) advanced backgammon books. I have seen no backgammon book, however, which can more quickly get a players' game to improve dramatically.

Essential Backgammon Problems by Bill Robertie is one of them. The book consists of common, everyday type positions where an intermediate player found the wrong play over the board. Robertie explains what the right play is and why it’s better than the play that was chosen.

Better Backgammon was written 40 years ago. The advice it contains is generally sound. But, when reading any backgammon book from the “old days” (i.e., any time in the last century), it is a good idea to have access to computer rollouts.
